Tom Ashworth’s Prospectors Cache:
From Gold Mining to Metal Detecting Adventures
By Tom Ashworth — Prospectors Cache
A Website with Real Prospecting History
Tom Ashworth’s Prospectors Cache is more than just a website. It is part of the early history of online gold prospecting, metal detecting, treasure hunting, and outdoor adventure.
Long before social media, YouTube channels, online forums, and modern treasure-hunting groups became common, Prospectors Cache was already helping people learn about gold prospecting, metal detecting, equipment, locations, and the excitement of searching for hidden treasure.
The original Prospectors Cache started back in 1994. At that time, the internet was still new, and very few people were sharing real gold prospecting information online. The goal was simple: help others learn from real experience.
Today, that same idea is still at the heart of TomAshworth.com.

From Colorado to Alaska: A Lifetime of Searching
My treasure-hunting journey started in Colorado, where I became interested in metal detecting, gold prospecting, and the idea that history could still be found under the ground.
Over the years, that interest grew into something much bigger.
In 1984, I was involved in dredging for gold in Alaska. That experience helped shape the way I look at prospecting today. Gold mining is not just about finding gold. It is about understanding water, rock, history, equipment, patience, and hard work.
There is no magic button in prospecting. You study the area, use the right tools, work safely, and learn from every trip.
That is the kind of practical experience Prospectors Cache was built on.
Treasure Hunting Above and Below the Water
Gold prospecting is only one part of the story. Metal detecting and treasure hunting have also been a major part of my life.
Some of the most exciting finds happen where people least expect them — old home sites, ghost towns, swimming areas, rivers, lakes, beaches, parks, and forgotten pieces of history.
I have spent years using metal detectors on land and underwater. Underwater detecting is one of my favorite types of treasure hunting because it combines diving, research, equipment knowledge, and the possibility of finding lost jewelry, coins, relics, and personal items that matter to people.
One of the milestones in my treasure-hunting history was finding Spanish treasure while diving a shipwreck with an underwater metal detector. Finds like that do not happen every day, but they are a reminder of why research and persistence matter.

Prospectors Cache: One of the Early Gold Prospecting Sites on the Web
In 1994, Prospectors Cache became one of the first gold prospecting websites on the internet.
That matters because the early internet was not packed with information like it is today. Back then, if you wanted to learn about prospecting, you usually had to rely on books, local clubs, old-timers, trial and error, or hands-on experience.
Prospectors Cache helped bring that knowledge online.
The site became a place where people could learn, explore, and connect with the adventure of gold prospecting and treasure hunting.
The mission has always been direct:
Help people find better information, use better equipment, stay realistic, and enjoy the hunt.
What Prospectors Cache Is Today
Today, TomAshworth.com continues the same tradition, but with more modern tools.
Prospectors Cache now covers:
- Metal detecting
- Gold prospecting
- Treasure hunting
- Detector reviews
- Real-world field testing
- Lost jewelry recovery
- 3D printed detecting gear
- Gold refining and recovery
- YouTube videos
- Outdoor adventure
- Texas detecting and prospecting locations
The site is not about hype. It is about practical advice from someone who has actually used the equipment, tested the methods, and spent time in the field.
That is important because many people today are overwhelmed by advertising, paid reviews, and gear recommendations that do not always match real-world use.
Prospectors Cache is different. The focus is on what actually works.

Why I Still Love Metal Detecting and Gold Prospecting
The best part of this hobby is not always the value of the find.
Sometimes it is the story.
A silver ring, an old coin, a button, a relic, a small piece of gold, or a lost wedding band can all connect us to a person, a place, or a moment in time.
Metal detecting and prospecting also get you outside. They make you study maps, learn history, understand geology, and pay attention to details most people walk right past.
Every signal is a question.
Every hole is a possibility.
Every trip teaches something.
That is what keeps the hobby interesting after all these years.
Helping Beginners Get Started the Right Way
One of the goals of Prospectors Cache is to help beginners avoid common mistakes.
Many new people buy the wrong detector, hunt the wrong locations, give up too early, or believe unrealistic claims about easy treasure.
The truth is simple: good finds come from a combination of research, patience, proper equipment, and time in the field.
A beginner does not need the most expensive detector to get started. But they do need to understand the basics:
- Learn your machine
- Dig repeatable signals
- Research your locations
- Respect private property
- Fill your holes
- Follow local laws
- Be patient
- Keep learning
Treasure hunting rewards the person who keeps going.
Built Around Real Experience
Prospectors Cache is built on decades of hands-on experience in gold mining, dredging, detecting, diving, rockhounding, equipment testing, and outdoor problem-solving.
That experience now carries into my YouTube channel, website articles, product recommendations, custom gear, and field videos.
Whether I am testing a metal detector, hunting a river, recovering lost jewelry, working with gold, or building useful accessories, the goal is the same:
Share what I learn so others can benefit from it.
The Future of Prospectors Cache
