History of Marble Falls

The origin of Marble Falls dates back to 1887. Gen. Adam Rankin Johnson founded this city along the mighty Colorado River.  The city derives its name from water that flows over lime shelves hardened by time and resembling marble. Post construction of the Max Starcke Dam, Marble Falls was rechristened as Lake Marble Falls. In modern times, Marble Falls is popular for its granite quarries and tourism. The ‘Sunset Red Granite’ used in constructing the Texas Capitol building came from Marble Falls. Marble Falls from which the town derives its name is today submerged.  This consequent to the construction of the Max Stracke Dam (1951).  It does gets revealed at an interval of a few years when the lake gets lowered for cleaning.  The modern day town sits on the embankment of Lake Marble Falls.  The Western edge of the town is also famous for its Granite Mountain that holds significant reserves of the well known pink granite.  Many prominent buildings in Texas have used the pink granite in their construction and thus sort of immortalized Marble Falls into history.
