The city of Granite Shoals is located in Burnet County, Texas. The area was inhabited by 4910 people according to the 2010 census.

Geography of Granite Shoals

The city is located in southwestern Burnet County on the east bend of Lake Lyndon B. Johnson shore at 30°35′13″N 98°22′54″W. Marble Falls is 7 miles to the east and downtown Austin is 56 miles in the southeast.

The city covers an area of 5.7 sq. miles of which 4.5 sq. miles is land and 1.2 sq. miles (20%) is covered with water.(source: U.S. Census Bureau Report).

There were 2040 people, 825 households and 593 families in the city. The population density was 828.8 people per sq. mile. 1,224 housing units were present (497.0 houses per sq. mile).

The number of households was 825, out of which 27.6% had minors (less than 18 years old) living with them, 59.3% of the households had married couples, female householders without husband constituted 8.1% of the households and non-families made up 28.1% of the households. Individuals constituted 22.2% of the households and people aged 65 and above made up 10.9% of the households. The average family size was 2.87 and the average household size was 2.47.

The city was incorporated be a vote in 1966 by its residents. Originally the city comprised of various sections of Sherwood Shores subdivision (at the time the largest platted subdivision in Texas). Sherwood Shores Subdivisions were formed by merging Phillips, Nauman and Ebeling ranches in 1962. Residents voted to adopt a home rule charter to govern the city in November 2005 and the first manager was hired in 2006.

Granite Mining is the main industry in Granite Shoals, tourism to the place is also famous among lake enthusiasts due to its 18 city parks, most of which are located on the Lyndon B. Johnson Lake. Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center, is scheduled to be built in the city’s municipal complex. On completion the Tennis Center will have 18 adult courts and at least 2 QuickStart courts for children. In 2010, the QuickStart courts became functional and fundraising events are in place for the rest of the Center. In 2011, Granite Shoals received grant for Leonal Manzano Hike, Bike and Run Trails. The 2.5 mile trail will open up in the municipal complex. The economic prospects of the city look strong and the growth has been great as evidenced by the opening of a new bank and many new stores.

Education

Granite Shoals is served by Marble Independent School District, elementary students attend Highland Lakes Elementary School while older students attend schools in Marble Falls, six miles away.
